
Audio File Formats Explained: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, M4A
There are dozens of audio formats, but five cover nearly every practical use case: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, and M4A. This guide explains what each one is, when to use it, and how they compare on quality, size, and compatibility.

MP3 — the universal standard
MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, 1993) remains the most universally supported audio format in history. Every device, operating system, car stereo, Bluetooth speaker, and streaming platform released in the last 30 years plays MP3. At 192kbps, it's transparent for most listeners. At 320kbps, the difference from lossless is inaudible in blind tests for the vast majority of people.

WAV — the editing standard
WAV (Waveform Audio File Format, Microsoft 1991) stores audio as raw, uncompressed PCM samples. Every sample is preserved exactly as captured. No encoding, no approximation. WAV is the correct format for recording sessions, mixing, mastering, and any workflow involving repeated editing.
Use WAV when: recording, editing in a DAW, or any situation where the file will be processed multiple times. Always edit in WAV and convert to MP3 only at the final distribution step.
FLAC — lossless with compression
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec, 2001) reduces WAV file size by 40–60% using lossless compression — like ZIP for audio. Decoding FLAC produces bit-for-bit identical data to WAV. FLAC also supports extensive metadata (album art, ReplayGain, cue sheets) that WAV handles poorly.
Use FLAC when: archiving your music library, listening on a hi-fi system, or storing high-resolution recordings. The one caveat: Safari and iOS don't natively support FLAC — use ALAC (Apple's lossless format) for Apple device compatibility.
OGG Vorbis — the open-source alternative
OGG Vorbis (Xiph.Org, 2000) is a free, open-source lossy codec that was designed as a patent-free MP3 alternative. At equivalent bitrates, it produces slightly better quality than MP3. It's widely used in Linux, open-source games (including Minecraft's audio), and web audio.
Use OGG when: working in open-source environments, developing web audio applications, or using platforms that specifically accept OGG (Bandcamp, SoundCloud). Avoid OGG for general sharing — it doesn't play on Safari or many standalone devices.
M4A (AAC) — Apple's format
M4A is the file extension for AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) audio stored in an MPEG-4 container. AAC is technically superior to MP3 — it achieves better quality at the same bitrate due to more efficient perceptual coding. AAC at 256kbps is roughly equivalent to MP3 at 320kbps.
Use M4A when: working within the Apple ecosystem (iTunes, Logic Pro, Final Cut), creating iPhone ringtones (which use M4R, the same codec), or when file size efficiency matters more than legacy compatibility.

- Lossy → lossless (MP3 to WAV): Makes the file larger but doesn't improve quality. The lossy artifacts are already baked in.
- Lossy → lossy (MP3 to AAC): Adds generation loss on top of existing loss. Always convert from lossless source if available.
- Lossless → lossy (WAV to MP3): Normal distribution workflow. Do this only at the final step — not in the middle of a project.
