
What Is a Waveform? How Audio Editors Use It
A waveform is a visual representation of an audio signal showing how amplitude changes over time. Understanding waveforms lets you make faster, more precise edits without listening through entire recordings.
Every audio editor displays a waveform as the primary interface. Once you understand what you're looking at, you can identify song sections, locate mistakes, find silences, and place cut points without guessing — and without listening to the whole file.
What a waveform shows
The horizontal axis represents time — left is the beginning, right is the end. The vertical axis represents amplitude (loudness) — taller peaks mean louder audio. A flat line means silence. Dense, tall clusters mean loud, complex audio (full band, drum hit). Shorter, smoother waves mean quieter or simpler audio (solo voice, fade-out).

How to use the waveform in sound-goods
Finding where content starts

Identifying song sections
Choruses are typically louder than verses — look for sections where peaks are consistently taller. You can often locate the chorus without listening, just by spotting amplitude increases.
Finding mistakes and pauses

Stereo vs. mono waveforms
A stereo file has two channels (left and right). Some editors show two stacked waveforms; sound-goods combines them into one display showing the louder of the two channels at each point.
