Nightcore: What It Is and How to Make One Online
Nightcore is a music genre created by speeding up a song to 1.25×–1.5×, which raises the pitch and creates a high-energy, anime-inspired sound. You can make a nightcore version of any song in under 2 minutes — no software, no upload.
Nightcore started as a YouTube phenomenon in the early 2010s, where creators would speed up pop and EDM tracks and upload them over anime visuals. It grew into a full genre with millions of dedicated listeners. The technical process is simple: increase playback speed, which simultaneously increases tempo and pitch. sound-goods Speed Changer does this entirely in your browser.

| Speed | Pitch change | Sound | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.15× | +2.5 semitones | Subtle, barely noticeable | Upbeat pop versions |
| 1.25× | +4 semitones | Classic nightcore — recognizable but not extreme | Most nightcore tracks |
| 1.35× | +5.5 semitones | High-energy, classic anime feel | EDM and hyperpop nightcore |
| 1.5× | +7 semitones | Very fast and high — chipmunk territory | Extreme nightcore |
| 2.0× | +12 semitones | One octave up — fully chipmunk effect | Meme edits, not typical nightcore |
Nightcore vs. slowed + reverb
These are the two dominant "fan edit" genres and they are exact opposites:
- Nightcore — speed up (1.25×–1.5×), pitch rises, tempo increases. High energy, anime aesthetic.
- Slowed + reverb — slow down (0.75×–0.85×), pitch drops, tempo slows. Melancholic, lofi aesthetic.
Both are created with the same tool — just drag the slider in the opposite direction. See our guide: How to Make Slowed + Reverb.
Tips for better nightcore
- Songs with already-high female vocals tend to produce the best nightcore. The pitch shift makes them sound more characteristically "nightcore."
- EDM, pop, and hyperpop translate better than slow ballads — the increased tempo makes the rhythm more exciting rather than chaotic.
- 1.25×–1.3× is the sweet spot for most tracks. Above 1.5× starts sounding unnatural rather than energetic.
- You don't need reverb for nightcore — that's the slowed genre. Keep it dry and punchy.
