How to Create a Custom Ringtone on iPhone Without iTunes
You can set a custom ringtone on iPhone without iTunes, a computer, or a paid app — using GarageBand (free, pre-installed). Here's the complete workflow from audio clip to ringtone in under 5 minutes.
The traditional way to add custom ringtones to iPhone required iTunes and a Mac or PC. That method still works, but GarageBand (free on iPhone and iPad) offers a simpler path that requires no computer at all. Here's how to go from an audio clip to a working iPhone ringtone using only your phone.
What you need
- Your trimmed audio clip as an MP3 (under 30 seconds — iPhone's hard limit)
- GarageBand app on your iPhone (free, usually pre-installed; download from App Store if needed)
- The clip saved to your iPhone's Files app or iCloud Drive
Step 1 — Cut the clip to under 30 seconds
Open sound-goods MP3 Cutter on your iPhone
Go to sound-goods.com/mp3-cutter-online in Safari. Tap the drop zone to load your audio from the Files app.
Select your 20–28 second clip
Drag the handles to select the section you want. Keep it under 30 seconds — iPhone will silently reject ringtones at or above 30 seconds.
Add a 1–2 second fade out
Use the Fade Out slider. This prevents an abrupt cut when the ringtone loops.
Export and save to Files
Tap Export MP3 → in the share sheet, tap Save to Files → choose a location you can find (iCloud Drive or On My iPhone).
Step 2 — Convert to ringtone using GarageBand
Open GarageBand
Tap the GarageBand icon. If asked to choose an instrument, select Audio Recorder (or any instrument — it doesn't matter).
Import your audio clip
Tap the loop icon (top right) → Files tab → navigate to your MP3 → long-press it and tap Import. The clip appears in the timeline.
Verify the clip length
The clip must be under 30 seconds on the timeline. If it's longer, drag the right edge to trim it.
Share as Ringtone
Tap the down arrow (▾) top-left → My Songs → long-press your project → tap Share → Ringtone.
Name and export
Name your ringtone → tap Export → wait a moment → tap Use sound as… → Standard Ringtone. Done.
Cut your iPhone ringtone clip — free, works in Safari
Under 30 seconds, fade out included. No PC, no iTunes.
Open MP3 Cutter →The iTunes method (if you prefer a computer)
- Import your MP3 into iTunes / Music on Mac or PC
- Right-click → Song Info → set Start and Stop times to your 30-second clip
- Right-click → Create AAC Version
- Right-click the new file → Show in Finder (Mac) or Show in Explorer (PC)
- Rename: change
.m4ato.m4r - Drag the .m4r into iTunes under Tones → sync your iPhone
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ringtone doesn't appear in picker | File is 30+ seconds long | Re-export clip under 30s |
| GarageBand can't find the file | Saved to wrong location | Save to iCloud Drive or On My iPhone / Downloads |
| Export button greyed out | Clip is too long in timeline | Trim the right edge of the clip to under 30s |
| Ringtone disappears after export | GarageBand bug on older iOS | Update iOS and GarageBand, retry |
