What issound?
SOUND is a non-profit focused on environmentally sustainable and socially responsible practices for clothing and textiles. Our evaluation system and logo make it easy for shoppers to identify products that they can feel good about buying.
It's a simple idea, but a complex problem to solve. In this global economy, your T-shirt can spend nine months traveling from cotton seed to store, through as many as five countries, seven facilities, and countless hands, large and small.
Why now?
Put simply, the time is right, and the world needs this.
Resources are more scarce every day. Working conditions and standards around the world vary dramatically. In an age where information travels at the speed of light, we as consumers still know far too little about who made our clothes and what may have been compromised to get them to market.
SOUND has the experience and commitment to take on the challenge. But we can't do it alone. Your participation is critical -- your creativity, enthusiasm, and willingness to believe in a brighter future.
We are excited to be embarking on this journey with you.
SOUND Sightings
Thank you for nominating SOUND in the American Express Member's Project. With nearly 500 nominations, we finished in the top 8% -- 99th out of 1,200. Not a bad showing for a new, little non-profit! Click to read our original entry.
Look for SOUND in this September 5, 2008 Wall Street Journal article. Traffic to our initial website doubled that day. It's a bit of a "Where's Waldo," but it's in there!
LinkedIn and Toys"R"Us have partnered with SOUND to co-sponsor tote bags (US fair trade, 100% post-consumer) for the October 24, 2008 Columbia Social Enterprise Conference. In New York? It may not be too late to register.
